Heart Transplant

A heart transplant is a surgical procedure to replace a damaged or diseased heart with a healthy donor heart. It is typically performed for patients with end-stage heart failure or severe coronary artery disease when other treatment options are no longer effective. The surgery involves removing the patient's diseased heart and replacing it with a donor heart, ensuring normal blood circulation. There are two main types of heart transplants – Orthotopic Heart Transplant, Heterotopic Heart Transplant.

Types of Treatments

Orthotopic Heart Transplant - It is a surgical procedure where a patient's diseased heart is replaced with a healthy donor heart in the same anatomical position. Heterotopic Heart Transplant- It is a surgical procedure where the donor heart is connected to the patient's existing heart, allowing both hearts to work together to improve cardiac function.

Diagnosis

Heart transplants are usually recommended when severe heart disease is diagnosed through tests such as echocardiography, electrocardiogram (ECG), cardiac MRI, or biopsy, indicating that the heart can no longer function effectively.
